Cabroncita

  • Exhibition Type: Sculpture, Editorial, + Film
  • Year: 2018
  • Role: Artist

Presented as both a physical object and a short film, Cabroncita is a mobile sculpture that reclaims the hyper-masculine symbol of the pickup truck and reimagines it as a womxn-powered chariot. Built from a 1997 Toyota Tacoma, the piece merges neon, video, and performance to critique patriarchal structures within car culture, public space, and visual iconography.

Rooted in Los Angeles signage culture and influenced by the aesthetics of drag racing, Cabroncita places womxn, armed, styled, and unapologetic, behind the wheel. Neon flames, custom decals, and dominatrix boots stamped with “RIP MISOGYNY” convert the truck into both sculpture and a site of resistance. Drawing from a range of seductive visual codes, the work dismantles misogyny by reclaiming control over movement, space, and narrative.

The title, Cabroncita, references Mexican slang that carries tones of both insult and admiration, recontextualizing language as much as form.

Part tribute, part disruption, Cabroncita channels protest through visual spectacle.
It offers an unflinching portrait of power in motion, a bad girl vehicle built to subvert the status quo.
